Key Facts, International Travel, and Things to Do
Silverstone is a beautiful, sleepy village located in the East Midlands of the British countryside. The now famous racing circuit was originally one of the larger Royal Air Force bases in the area during World War II. Locals started racing around the airport service roads as early as 1948. And the first race was dubbed the "Mutton Grand Prix" after a driver struck a sheep on the circuit mid-race. After the race the offending driver headed over to the local farm and insisted on paying the farmer for the lost animal.
Silverstone Circuit is known as the home of British motorsport, and it's hard to argue with this when it is situated right at the heart of Motorsport Valley - a string of towns and cities in the area that are home to teams, manufactures and other businesses associated with the sport. Today, you'll find the Red Bull Racing, AMG Mercedes, Sahara Force India and Haas team factories just a stone's throw from the circuit.
In the proximity of Silverstone are three major localities, each with something different to offer. The local town of Towcester is a traditional quiet countryside town, with a traditional market square and plenty of local independent shops. Northampton is an old manufacturing town, which produced most of the nation’s shoes for many centuries. The town now boasts a prolific cultural quarter and is home to famous Rugby Union club the Northampton Saints. The city of Milton Keynes is modern and metropolitan, with a very unique and particular style in architecture. One of the first purpose built towns in the UK, Milton Keynes celebrated its 50th year in 2017 and a recent influx of big business means the amenities and entertainment in the area have drastically improved in recent years.
If you are travelling internationally, access to Silverstone is likely to be from one of the many UK airports. London is served by 5 major international airports; London Heathrow, London Gatwick, London City, London Stansted and London Luton. Each of these offer easy access into Central London, as well as the surrounding areas. From Central London you can take a coach service directly to Silverstone, or take a train service and bus service.
