DESTINATION & TOURISM

Key Facts, International Travel, and Things to Do

    Background

Silverstone is a beautiful, sleepy village in the countryside of the East Midlands. Originally one of the larger Royal Air Force bases during World War Two, locals started racing around the airport service roads as early as 1948. The first race was dubbed the "Mutton Grand Prix" after a driver struck a sheep on the circuit mid-race. Sure enough, after the race he drove to the local farm and insisted on paying the farmer for the lost animal.

Silverstone Circuit has always been dubbed the home of British motorsport, and it's hard to argue when it's in the heart of Motorsport Valley - a string of towns and cities through the area who are the home of so many related teams, manufactures and other associated business around the business. Even today, you'll find the Red Bull Racing, AMG Mercedes, Sahara Force India and Haas team factories just a stone's throw from the circuit.

In the proximity of Silverstone are three local towns, each with something different to offer. The local town of Towcester is a traditional countryside town, whilst Northampton is an old manufacturing town, which used to produce most of the nations shoes for many centuries. The City of Milton Keynes is modern and metropolitan, with a very unique and particular style in architecture. Originally a new town, which is celebrating it's 50th year in 2017, there has been a huge influx of big business that means the amenities and entertainment around it have rushed to catch up.
