Having been to Silverstone twice we decided it was time to move further afield and chose the Spanish grand prix as our first one outside of the UK. We stayed at the Sidorme Mollet hotel which was a couple of train stops away from the circuit, it was a perfect base for the track and a snippet of what we expected to pay over a race weekend. It’s a good 30 - 40 minute walk when you get off the train to the circuit, you pass through a little village where there are a few restaurants and shops for you to stock up on food and drinks to take into the circuit as they are way cheaper and also as a good place to have a drink on the way back to let the crowds get away. We didn’t buy anything inside the circuit as they were ridiculously over priced. From what I remember you were only allowed to take plastic bottles in and bags are searched on entry.
In my opinion the circuit itself didn’t provide much entertainment. There were hardly any stalls to look around, perhaps we have been spoilt with Silverstone having so many different stands to get involved with. We bought 3 day tickets in stand P which provided a good view of the 3rd bend but didn't give us much excitement. There was a large TV screen directly in front of us which meant we could keep up with what was happening. There wasn’t anything to do at the circuit other than watch practice, qualifying or the race. Finding our seats was a bit of challenge as our stand wasn’t very well sign posted. We didn’t have to queue to get in but getting out was a different story.
Obviously we were aware of how the Spanish felt about Hamilton but I wasn’t really prepared to be actually booed at personally for wearing his merchandise! You can imagine the noise when he had to retire on the second from last lap. The weather was fabulous but towards the end the heat got a bit much, covered seats would be a better option but if not make sure you have plenty sun cream and a hat. Also be aware of pick pockets, we had our camera pinched out of our rucksack on the train from a thief posing as a Red Bull supporter, we realised pretty quickly and confronted him and got it back (don’t really recommend this though!).
So to sum it up, I wouldn’t hesitate to buy tickets from BookF1 in the future and even though the race didn’t give us the result we wanted we still had a great time. I think it’s fair to say that you don’t really go to a F1grand prix to actually watch the race as you see more at home on the television, but the atmosphere is great, well if you’re not a Hamilton supporter in Spain!
