Having decided on the cheaper option for my first ever F1 I wasn't sure exactly what to expect. I'd seen some good photos from a friend's Siverstone 2011 GP.
Firstly, access by Gate 7 had gone wrong somewhere. The last sign pointing the way just sent me round a building with no clue as to where to go. I had to retrace to the MRT station and go in through Gate 3. I saw Gate 7 from inside, so it exists somewhere but the route was poorly marked.
Unfortunately I got a seat on the right-hand end of the Marina Bay Grandstand so just got to see the cars going away from me on a short slow straight. During the Friday afternoon practices there were more people there than I expected, and getting to a decent spot to take photos was not an option. Having no roof I was happy that there was no rain, but you have to make sure you have sun-cream on. As dusk set in the fabulous view changed to moody dark greys and my camera was unable to capture any more than a blurred car (as expected). After about 4 hours of sitting in the small plastic moulded seat though my legs felt very uncomfortable. Luckily I didn't have anyone either side of me so I could stretch out but I couldn't get comfortable. I therefore left early after the shortened first practice and decided that it was going to be better to watch the race on TV. So I bought all my rather expensive souvenirs from the good and patient staff at the tents and departed early. I didn't attend the qualifying or the race, and happily watched the qualifying in the Amara's bar, and the race from a bar in Clarke Quay. We even had the sound feed from the BBC so we got Martin Brundle and DC. I'm not convinced that the commentary at the venue would be audible with ear-defenders on and a full race in progress, and without commentary it's not much better than watching traffic on the motorway. I guess I expected that, but without a reasonable view of the track it wasn't worth persevering with.
There was quite a variety of food available below the grandstand, though I didn't partake. Note that you're not allowed to take food or drink into the venue, other than a small bottle of water. Sitting out in the Singapore sun for 3 or 4 hours isn't going to do you any favours, so take sun protection. There was only a motley collection of plastic porta-loos as this is not a custom race venue.
So, in conclusion, it's better to pay more and go for a seat by a longer straight or at a corner, take a cushion, and possibly a radio, but I also stand by my solution of watching the race in a bar somewhere. I was in Singapore for more than the GP so the experience didn't affect my holiday adversely.
